Pattern Difficulty Level Descriptions

Beginner

Beginner patterns are written for those that have learnt basic knitting techniques and now want to put these techniques into practice to produce interesting pieces. These patterns are written in simple language with minimal abbreviations.

The patterns assume you have already learnt a simple cast-on and cast-off, knit and pearl to form stockinette or garter stich, joining new balls of yarn, knitting flat, knitting in the round and knitting small circumferences with, for example, four double pointed needles. Check out the resources page if you need tips of refreshers for these techniques.

The patterns may  also use the following techniques: increasing and decreasing stiches, yarn over, slipping stiches, knitting through the back loop, simple alternative cast-ons and cast-offs and stiching pieces together with mattress stich. Links are provided to videos of these techniques, when used.

Some beginner patterns will also include options to use more advanced techniques to improve the finish.

Advanced Beginner

Advanced beginner patterns are suitable for those that have developed some confidence with their knitting.

Abbreviations are used throughout the patterns. Techniques included in patterns at this level include more advanced cast-ons, selvedges and buttonholes.
The pattern may use charts to represent lacework or cables but their use will be optional as the pattern will also be explained in words.

Intermediate

Intermediate patterns require you to have a greater level of confidence with and patience with patterns, reading your knitting, fixing errors and trying new techniques. Charts may be used instead of words to describe the instructions.

In addition to the techniques listed above, the patterns may also involve cable, short rows and more complex cast-ons and cast-offs. The patterns assume that you have some experience with these techniques. You may have to cope with multiple complexities such as continuing to repeat a pattern in a chart while also increasing and decreasing.

Links are still provided to the techniques that are most likely to be new to users.
