Lake Whakatipu in April is a simple vest with wide armholes and side slits in the bottom band. It is worked with two strands of dk (8 ply) yarn held together for a quick knit.

The pattern is intended to be beginner-friendly. It is written in an expanded format and uses simple techniques. Video links are provided for techniques that may be new to beginner knitters.

It worked from the bottom up and is seamed only at the shoulders. Stiches are picked up to form the bands of the neck and armholes.

It is named after a trip to the stunning Queenstown / Lake Whakatipu area.

Four sizes are provided. Choose the appropriate size by comparing your waist, hips and bust measurements to the finished garment measurements below.

The torso circumference measurement should be about the same as, or just a tiny bit larger, than the wearer’s hips at the widest point. (Note: the vest should actually sit above the widest point, but this provides a guide to the intended fit). You don’t want the vest to catch and stretch around the hips because this will cause it to bulge around the waist.

The torso circumference measurement should also be quite a bit bigger than the wearer’s waist measurement to allow lots of room (positive ease) around the waist.

The chest width of the garment should be slightly smaller (but not too much smaller) than the measurement across the widest part of the wearer’s bust, armhole to armhole. Those with larger busts may need to go up a size or alter the pattern to ensure the vest will be wide enough across the chest.

Two strands of a dk (8 ply) yarn are held together when working the vest.

Choose a yarn recommended for 4mm (US 6) needles and a gauge of about 22 stiches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette using 4mm (US 6) needles (although this pattern will use larger needles with the yarn held together). Some suggestions:

Sockmatician Edition DK, 90% Merino, 10% Possum, 104m per 50 grams.

Wild Earth Yarns Eden 8 Ply, 100% Polwarth Wool, 110m per 50 grams.

Skeinz Southlander DK, 100% Wool, 200m per 100 grams.

Vintage Abroad DK, 100% Wool, 102m per 50 grams.

The example in the images is worked in Wild Earth Yarns Eden 8 Ply, shade ‘Daisy’. This is a yarn that creates a soft, pillowy fabric.
6mm (US 10) round needles for working the ribbed bands on the armholes and neck. The round needle can also be used these for working the ribbed bands at the bottom (although they are worked flat rather than in the round).

Optional 6mm (US 10) straight needles (If you wish to use straight needles for working the ribbed bands at the bottom).

6.5mm (US 10.5) round needles for working the body. These can also be used for working the front and back chest between the armholes (although these are worked flat rather than in the round).

Optional 6.5mm (US 10.5) straight needles for working the chest.
