Winnie is a children’s beanie written for a smooth, soft and bouncy 8ply (dk) merino yarn, of which kids will also approve. It uses twisted knit stitches to outline the squares of the hat.

The pattern was named after my grandmother, who knitted a baby sweater for my son that started my love of crepe merino yarn like that shown in the images.

Advanced Beginner (see difficulty level descriptions)
Use a soft and smooth yarn for stich definition. The yarn should be recommended for 4mm to 4.5mm needles and a gauge of about 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette with 4mm needles. Suggested options:

Crucci Luxury Merino Crepe, 100% merino wool, 100 m per 50 grams

Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, 100% merino wool, 105m per 50 grams.

The hats in the images are worked in Crucci Luxury Merino Crepe colour Dove Grey and Duck Egg.
Round 4 mm (US 6) needles for the band and/or 4 double pointed needles (as preferred to work the smallish circumference of the band).

Round 4.5mm round (US 7) needles for the main part of the hat.

Four 4.5mm (US 7) double-pointed cable needles for working the crown.
